What campus activities or courses do you think helped you, or would have helped you, with this internship? Computer Architecture and System Design, VLSI Design, Microprocessor Based Design and Operating Systems Design. I was working on the physical hardware for testing so having knowledge about the VLSI design to understand the transistor alignment, leakage current, voltage, and temperature parameters is a big requirement. The micro architecture of the chips need computer architecture and system design basics so that helped me throughout. Also I worked on the programming so the courses in microprocessor based design and operating systems were useful as I studied them parallel with the work.
How would you describe the company culture? What was the most helpful thing your supervisor did to make you feel comfortable at the organization? AMD is very rich in diversification and co-op activities. As an Intern/Co-Op, I landed in a perfect role as a System Level Tester that made me learn the hardware (motherboard, ethernet, DIMMs, PCI slots) and how to interact with them. The test program development and running that on the test bench is something I loved working on. I focused on thermal calibration on the chips and (still in progress) to get solutions for the ongoing thermal issues in the industry. Apart from the learning, AMD provided various interactive sessions with the fellows and senior directors who shared their experiences and motivated the young talent. The highlight was that I got a picture with AMD CEO, Lisa Su.
