This prestigious award honors individuals who have made a contribution to the mission and ideals of the A. James Clark School of Engineering.  Up to five individuals are awarded the Glenn L. Martin Medal each year. The award is presented at the A. James Clark School of Engineering Celebration of Leadership, Philanthropy and Service Annual Recognition Dinner in the fall. 

Nomination Criteria for Selection:
An individual may be nominated who is a Clark School of Engineering alumnus/a or friend and has accomplished one or more of the following:

  • Contributed truly exceptional service to their community, the Clark School, the profession, and/or the public, or
  • Enhanced the student experience, research scholarship, academic excellence, technology commercialization, national and international reputation, and impact of the A. James Clark School of Engineering, or
  • Made distinguished contributions to the theory and practice of engineering or has demonstrated major accomplishments or guidance in emerging fields of engineering technology, or 
  • Managed or directed an organization that has made noteworthy national or international contributions in design, construction, production, or service delivery through the application of complex engineering principles.
    • Full name, address, and telephone number of the nominee.
    • A record of professional experience and noteworthy accomplishments, especially extraordinary contributions. What has this nominee accomplished that no one else has done?
    • Any noteworthy public or professional service accomplishments.
    • Any noteworthy awards won by the candidate, along with a description of the criteria for selection or significance.
    • A résumé, if available, including a list of important contributions, publications, patents, professional experience, and principal technical society memberships and activities.

    Nominees must be:

    • Living at the time of their nomination. Nomination will be considered up to five years.
    • Available to attend the awards ceremony. 
    • An individual or couple in whom the alumni, students, faculty, and staff of the Clark School will take pride in and be inspired by their extraordinary spirit and enthusiasm in promoting the Clark School.

    Nominees cannot be: 

    • Faculty or staff of the Clark School or any other institution 
    • Persons currently holding or running for elected state or federal public office in Maryland are not eligible for consideration

    Recipients

    Sonal Deshpande

    Sonal Deshpande is a retired sector vice president of Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, a leading global provider of advanced solutions for defense and intelligence customers.

    As sector vice president, Deshpande had responsibility for mission assurance across the sector, including quality and product assurance, compliance, process excellence and supplier quality. In addition, she was also responsible for the sector’s environmental health, safety and fire protection policy and execution.

    Prior to that, Deshpande was appointed vice president of engineering, manufacturing and logistics for the airborne and space divisions and was responsible for design, development and production of large-scale, mission-critical systems and complex hardware and software products within the airborne and space programs. She also served as vice president within the advanced concepts & technology areas focused on R&D and business development of affordable and open architecture concepts for maritime electronics.

    Deshpande has extensive experience in program management and operational leadership within government markets. She joined the company as a hardware design engineer and has held many leadership roles within engineering and mission critical systems. 

    Deshpande earned her M.S. in electrical engineering from The Johns Hopkins University School of Engineering and her B.S. in electrical engineering from The University of Maryland, College Park. Additionally, she has completed the Harvard Business School General Management Program.

    Deshpande is currently the advisory board chair for the University of Maryland, College Park, Electrical and Computer Engineering department. Sonal Deshpande is actively involved with promoting, supporting and mentoring women to pursue STEM-based careers.

     

    Philip Wiser

    Phil Wiser is an industry-leading technology and digital media entrepreneur and executive. He serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Paramount, leading the global technology strategy, shared services, and multiplatform operations for the company. 

     Prior to the merger of Viacom and CBS in December 2019, Wiser was the Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of CBS Corporation, where he oversaw the technology strategy and development across the company’s entire business portfolio. Before joining CBS, Wiser served as Chief Technology Officer at Hearst. In this role, he managed Hearst’s technology migration to the cloud, and established a data-driven, cloud-first media environment for its digital businesses. Wiser was also the Chief Technology Officer at Sony Corporation of America and Sony Music, responsible for creating the digital businesses at Sony Music, including the forging of the groundbreaking deal to launch iTunes. 

     Earlier in his career, Wiser was a key pioneer in the creation of the online digital music industry and the over-the-top TV market as founder of Liquid Audio and Sezmi. Both companies were the first to create commercial Internet-based media offerings in music and television. With numerous patents issued for these efforts, Phil Wiser broke new ground across the areas of IP based content delivery, machine recommendation systems, video delivery over the Internet and cybersecurity. 


    Stanley R. Zupnik

    From a young age, Stanley R. Zupnik  knew he wanted to be a builder and real estate developer. The Washington, D.C., native was the first in his family to attend college and earn a B.S. degree. A civil engineering major, Zupnik started his education having already worked as an engineer on job sites. 

    After graduating, he went to work in the construction industry as one of a few builders he knew with the advantage of an engineering degree from the University of Maryland. In 1964, Zupnik launched his own construction firm, Majestic Builders Corp, which quickly became among the greater Washington, D.C. region’s top residential construction management and general contracting firms; Majestic was also among the first firms to use IBM System/36 computers for project management and scheduling. 

    To this day he remains the President/Owner of Majestic Builders Corp. located in Chevy Chase Maryland.

    To help position the next generation of engineers to build a smarter future for the good of all, the real estate mogul who never forgot the impact of his Maryland Engineering education made a $25 million naming gift toward the state-of-the-art, 157,000-square-foot Stanley R. Zupnik Hall. UMD’s newest facility for research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and education will foster collaboration between a number of engineering disciplines. 

     

     

    Kimmy DuongKimmy Duong

    Kimmy Duong joined Pragmatics in 1987, following a successful 25-year career at IBM. She serves as Pragmatics’ Vice Chairman, as well as Chief Financial Officer. As CFO, she is responsible for all corporate support functions, including accounting, finance, budgeting, treasury, human resources, risk management, contracts, purchasing, and compliance. She also provides oversight for corporate tax functions.

    Ms. Duong began her career at IBM-Vietnam as a programmer/analyst and installed several financial systems, including a state-of-the-art accounting system for a large electronics firm. She received several awards for excellent technical achievement. Ms. Duong rejoined IBM in the United States in 1975 and led a number of projects, including the conversion of one of IBM’s key internal administrative databases. 

    Influenced by her Buddhist background, Ms. Duong has always been concerned about the less fortunate. Being raised in a poor family and coming to the United States in 1975 as a refugee, Ms. Duong knows the many challenges that poverty brings.

    So throughout most of her life, Ms. Duong has generously donated to charitable causes such as the Vietnamese Association; scholarships for High School students in Nha Trang: housing in Hue, My Tho, Nha Trang and Phan Thiet; cataract surgery in Can Tho; and medical care in Hue and Nha Trang.

    Since coming to the US, Ms. Duong has also contributed to the Code of Support scholarships for Veterans, the University of Maryland Technology Scholarship Fund, and numerous Vietnamese-American student scholarships. Recently, Ms. Duong formed the Kimmy Duong Foundation to support all this work in a more structured and sustainable way. 

    Ms. Duong earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Saigon. In 2008, Ms. Duong was selected as one of the Profiles in Diversity Journal's Women Worth Watching. She is married to Dr. Long Nguyen and resides in Virginia.

     

    Rattan KhosaRattan Khosa

    Rattan Khosa serves as the  CEO and founder of AMSYSCO Inc., where his visionary leadership drives determination, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy. Born in India, Mr. Khosa came to the United States in 1969 with just $3.75. His academic path led him to the University of Maryland, where he earned his master's degree in Structural Engineering.

    In 1981, Mr. Khosa founded AMSYSCO Inc., a leading post-tensioning and barrier cable supplier for commercial construction buildings. His commitment to superior customer service and quality products fueled its growth, weathering financial storms while contributing to landmark structures nationwide. Previously, he was a Chief Operating Officer and Division Manager at Concrete Construction Supply, Inc., sales manager at INRYCO, Inc. and a design engineer at Atlas Pre-stressing Corp. 

    His philanthropy shines through initiatives like the Rattan L. Khosa '71 Graduate Endowed Scholarship in Structural Engineering at the University of Maryland and the Rattan L. Khosa Student Entrepreneurs Program at the University of Chicago's Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and The Rattan L. Khosa Scholarship, which empowers MBA students, with a preference for Kashmiri Hindu Pandit candidates. 

    Mr. Khosa’s influence extends to leadership roles in the Post-Tensioning Institute and a former board position on the US-India Chamber of Commerce. He was recognized as the 2019 Entrepreneur of the Year by the Booth School of Business and awarded the 2020 Legend and Hall of Fame Award from the Post-Tensioning Institute and the Pinnacle Award from the Kashmiri Overseas Association.

    Mr. Khosa holds an MBA from the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business as well as a Master of Science in Structural Engineering from the University of Maryland, a Civil Engineering degree from the University of Rajasthan, and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Jammu and Kashmir.
     

    Maria KorsnickMaria Korsnick

    Maria Korsnick is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), the nuclear industry’s policy organization in Washington, D.C. 

    Drawing on her engineering background, hands-on experience in reactor operations and a deep knowledge of energy policy and regulatory issues, Ms. Korsnick aims to increase understanding of nuclear energy’s economic and environmental benefits among policymakers and the public.

    Before joining NEI, she was Senior Vice President of Northeast Operations for Exelon, responsible for overseeing operation of the Calvert Cliffs 1 and 2, R.E. Ginna, and Nine Mile Point 1 and 2 nuclear power plants. 

    Before Exelon, Ms. Korsnick served as Chief Nuclear Officer (CNO) and acting Chief Executive Officer at Constellation Energy Nuclear Group. She began her career at Constellation in 1986 and held positions of increasing responsibility, including engineer, operator, manager, site Vice President, Corporate Vice President, and CNO.

    Ms. Korsnick holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Maryland, and has held a Senior Reactor Operator license. She lives in Maryland with her husband and two children.

     

    cEKChristopher E.  Kubasik

    Christopher E. “Chris” Kubasik is Chair and Chief Executive Officer of L3Harris Technologies. L3Harris Technologies is a Trusted Disruptor for the global aerospace and defense industry. With customers’ mission-critical needs always in mind, our more than 50,000 employees deliver end-to-end technology solutions connecting the space, air, land, sea and cyber domains. 

    Mr. Kubasik was appointed Chief Executive Officer in June 2021. Immediately prior, he served as Vice Chair, President and Chief Operating Officer – roles he assumed upon the merger of L3 Technologies, Inc. and Harris Corporation in June 2019. Mr. Kubasik has more than 30 years of experience in the A&D industry, having joined L3 Technologies as President and Chief Operating Officer in 2015. He was elected Chair of the board in May 2018 after having been named Chief Executive Officer and elected to the company’s board of directors in January 2018.

    Earlier, Mr. Kubasik was President and Chief Executive Officer of the Seabury Advisory Group LLC, a leading aviation and A&D professional services firm. In 2010, he was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer of Lockheed Martin Corporation, where he also held several senior executive and finance roles. Before joining Lockheed Martin, he enjoyed a successful career at Ernst & Young, where he was named partner in 1996. Mr. Kubasik is a member of the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA), Air Force Association (AFA), the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA), the Navy League of the United States, Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Board of Directors, and the Florida Council of 100.

    Mr. Kubasik received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland’s Smith School of Business. He also completed the Systems Acquisition Management Program at the Defense Acquisition University at Fort Belvoir and received an Executive Engineering Certificate n from Carnegie Mellon University.

     

    ReganTimothy J. Regan

    Timothy J. Regan is President and CEO of The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company.  

    Mr. Regan is a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and of the University of Maryland, College Park with a degree in Civil Engineering.  Upon graduation, he worked with the Maryland State Highway Administration in construction inspection until joining Whiting-Turner in 1980 as a Project Engineer. He worked on utility, public works and heavy industrial projects for several years including water, wastewater, power and waste-to-energy projects. In the early 1990’s Mr. Regan helped expand Whiting-Turner’s presence in the life sciences industries, including biotechnology, pharmaceutical processing and various federal laboratory clients.  

    Tim Regan serves on the Board of Directors of the Greater Baltimore Committee, Board of Visitors of the UMCP School of Engineering, and University of Maryland College Park Foundation Board of Trustees. In February of 2017, Tim founded TouchPoint Baltimore Mondawmin, with Calvin Butler of BGE. TouchPoint is a collaboration center that works to disrupt the historic isolation in the underserved West Baltimore community of Mondawmin.

    Alice Sesay Pope
    Alice Sesay Pope is a strategic senior business executive, published author and keynote speaker.

    Alice is an Amazon corporate vice president where she leads the Global Device, Digital and Alexa service support organization. She leads a team of 10K employees across software development, data science, operations, product, process and program management. Her team designs the technology and support models to launch new and existing products and services for 140+ countries and 28 languages for Kindle, Tablets, Echo, Fire TV, Alexa, robots, satellite and Prime Video, Music, and Games etc.

    For the past two decades, Alice held executive leadership roles at Fortune 100 companies (Amazon, Microsoft, Visa, Johnson & Johnson, Capital One and USAA). Her experience spans software, consumer, healthcare, and financial services. She is distinguished with several industry awards: 2013 Gold Stevie Customer Service and Sales Most Outstanding Executive leader, 2015 Multi-cultural diversity leader by National Diversity Council, and 2020 Stevie Gold Women Business Service and Support. Alice is also an advisory board member of Execs in the Know.

    Alice serves as a champion for women and minorities. Over the years, Alice has served on the boards of the Urban League of Rochester, Leadership Memphis, and leads various youth and women’s ministries for her local church. She continues to mentor women around the global to reach their full potential.

    Alice holds a BS in Chemical Engineering (1995) from the University of Maryland at College Park and MBA from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill (2002). She published her first book, Transformation from the Inside Out, in 2017 and has been featured in Forbes and CIO Magazine.

    Alice lives in Austin, TX. She is married to Ed and has three sons, Daryl, Mitchell and Xavier.


    Raymond P. Schiavone

    Ray Schiavone is Managing Director of Ranch View Technologies LLC. An experienced business leader in a variety of industries, Ray served as an executive for 14 years at GE during CEO Jack Welch’s tenure, followed by an industry recognized entrepreneurial career where he created more than $1 billion of shareholder value. For over 20 years, Ray held the position of President & CEO at several successful technology companies, most recently as CEO of Quark Software Inc., where he led its turnaround, resulting in an acquisition by private equity. Previously, Ray was President and CEO of Arbortext Inc., (acquired by Parametric Technology Corp), and was President of TPN Register LLC, a GE and Thomas Publishing joint venture. 

    In addition to his operating business leadership, Ray has served as founder, investor, advisor and board member of several entrepreneurial businesses including co-founding Nagle Athletic Surfaces Inc. (acquired by AstroTurf Corporation), and a board member for 3es Innovation Inc. (acquired by Rubicon Technology Partners). In his current role, Ray has invested and serves on the board of portfolio companies Oberon Technologies, and EpistemicAI, and as an advisor for several others.

    Ray received an MBA from the University of Maryland and a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Syracuse University. He is a graduate of GE’s Corporate Audit Staff and Information Management Leadership programs. Ray has been active on a number of boards, including serving on the Board of Visitors of the University of Maryland’s Clark School of Engineering for 23 years. He has been recognized for his corporate and entrepreneurial success and received several awards including Michigan Venture Capital Association’s Entrepreneur of the Year award, Crain’s Detroit Business Forty under Forty, and the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award.

     

    Oliver Bruce Dale, Ph.D. 
    Oliver Bruce Dale, Ph.D. received his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland in 1964. Upon graduation, he joined Bell Telephone Laboratories. He received a full scholarship to complete his master’s degree at the University of Maryland in 1967 and doctorate at Purdue University in 1970.

    While at Bell Labs in the 1970s, Dr. Dale led the successful design and development of the largest highly distributed processing system. This system contained over 2,000 micro and mini computers, as well as hundreds of custom-designed electronic access units used for diagnosing and facilitating the repair of telephone lines. He also led the product design, development, and deployment of the fastest packet data switch that aided data networks throughout the world in the 1980s. He received the President’s Recognition Award for his efforts leading and teaching Leadership Training with Telcordia.
     
    Dr. Dale joined Iridium in 1995 as a Senior Vice President for Engineering and Operations. His team deployed over 80 low earth satellites and 13 ground stations and associated business offices throughout the world to enable voice communication covering every square foot of the planet. Iridium is still flying today.
     
    In 2000 Dr. Dale moved to Lucent/Alcatel where he was responsible for the successful development and deployment of the third-generation international wireless product line. He also established the Mickey Dale Family Foundation in honor of his late wife. Major recipients of this award have been the Clark School
    of Engineering; the College of Southern Maryland; the St. Francis International
    School; the Quest Montessori School; and Leah’s House, a shelter for homeless and abused women and their children. Following his retirement from Lucent/Alcatel, he taught Math and Physics at the College of Southern Maryland.

    In 2008, the National Security Agency (NSA) asked Dr. Dale to serve on their Advisory Board and to lead an effort to improve the development of their large software systems. He and his team developed a framework called The NSA Way and taught the approach to over 200 software teams and thousands of software developers. He retired (again) in 2016.
     
    Christopher T. Jones, Ph.D.
    Christopher T. Jones, Ph.D. is corporate vice president and president, Northrop Grumman Technology Services, a recognized leader in integrated logistics; sustainment; modernization; defense, health, civil and government services; and training solutions.
     
    Dr. Jones leads a business of approximately 13,000 employees across all 50 states within the U.S. and in 16 countries at more than 500 locations worldwide, supporting a diverse customer base, including: the U.S. departments of Defense, Energy, Homeland Security, State and Interior; NASA and the U.S. Postal Service. The sector provides life-cycle solutions, logistical and training support, sustainment and modernization operations that are integral to national and global security.
     
    Dr. Jones joined Northrop Grumman in 2004 as director of product support for the Airborne Early Warning Program. Prior to joining Northrop Grumman, he worked for Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, where he led analysis, flight tests and research on innovative rotorcraft technologies. He also was the company’s technology lead on the RAH-66 Comanche helicopter program and served as chief systems engineer for the Naval Hawk program.
     
    Dr. Jones earned a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He earned two master’s degrees in aerospace engineering and engineering management from the University of Dayton and a doctorate degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Maryland. He is also a retired U.S. Air Force officer and retired member of the Connecticut Air National Guard.
     
    Dr. Jones serves on the Board of Visitors for the University of Maryland College Park A. James Clark School of Engineering, the Georgia Tech Advisory Board, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Board, and the Museum of Aviation National Board of Advisors.
     
    Northrop Grumman is a leading global security company providing innovative systems, products, and solutions in autonomous systems, cyber, C4ISR, strike, and logistics, and modernization to customers worldwide.
     
    Courtney Clark Pastrick
    For almost 30 years, Courtney Clark Pastrick has led her family’s philanthropic giving as Foundation President. Today, as Board Chair, she will help lead the Foundation into its next chapter and continue to honor her father’s legacy.
     
    Ms. Pastrick is active in the Washington, DC-area community. She has served in leadership roles with several local non-profit organizations, including as former Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Washington Jesuit Academy, a middle school for at-risk boys in DC, and as a trustee for Collegiate Directions, Inc., a college access program for low-income, first-generation-to-college students in Maryland. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Vanderbilt University and DC-CAP, a college access program for public and charter school students in DC. She also serves on the board of Clark Enterprises, the private investment firm founded in 1972 by her father.
     
    Ms. Pastrick resides in Chevy Chase, Maryland with her husband, R. Scott Pastrick, President and CEO of Prime Policy Group. They have two daughters and a son. Ms. Pastrick holds a Juris Doctorate from the Catholic University of America and a bachelor’s degree from Duke University.
     
    Marvin F. Weissberg
    Marvin F. Weissberg is the founder and chairman of the board of Weissberg Corporation, one of Washington D.C.’s major commercial real estate development companies. Founded in 1955, Weissberg Corporation has built and developed office buildings, shopping centers, apartment houses, hotels, and mixed-use developments in the Washington metropolitan area.

    As a strong believer in civic participation, Mr. Weissberg has dedicated both time and financial resources to the nonprofit sector and political arenas. In 1984, he was one of the founding board members of the National Democratic Institute and served on that board for 17 years. In addition, he has served on government planning boards, commissions, financial institutions, and on the board of local theaters and many other nonprofit organizations.
     
    In 1988, Mr. Weissberg established the Weissberg Foundation to alleviate human suffering, broaden cultural understanding, and advance social justice. Since its beginning, the Foundation has given nearly $15,000,000 to more than 300 nonprofit organizations locally, nationally, and internationally.

     

    Robert D. Briskman
    Mr. Briskman received his Bachelor of Science degree from Princeton University in 1954 and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland in 1961. He has been involved with satellite communications systems since their inception. Mr. Briskman is currently President of Telecommunications Engineering Consultants. In 1991 he co-founded Sirius Satellite Radio serving as Executive Vice President, Engineering, where he was responsible for the implementation of its satellite radio broadcasting system to mobile subscribers in the United States, and then served as Technical Executive of Sirius XM Radio.
     
    Mr. Briskman was employed by the Geostar Corporation from 1986 to 1990
    where he was Senior Vice President, Engineering. Mr. Briskman was with
    COMSAT from 1964 through 1985 where he last was responsible for providing
    technical services in the areas of satellites, earth stations and telecommunications
    systems. He was Vice President for System Implementation of COMSAT General Corporation. Prior to joining COMSAT, Mr. Briskman was Chief of Program Support for the Office of Tracking and Data Acquisition at NASA where he and received the APOLLO Achievement Award. Prior to joining NASA, he worked for the Army Security Agency and IBM before NASA.
     
    Mr. Briskman is a fellow and past Director, Vice President for Technical Activities
    and Secretary-Treasurer of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
    (IEEE), which gave him the 2008 IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society (AESS) Pioneer Award and the 2017 Judith Resnik Space Award. He is also a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) which gave him the 2007 Aerospace Communications Award and a Member of the National Academy of Engineering. He has authored over 70 technical papers, holds many United States and foreign patents and has been inducted into the Society of Satellite Professionals (SSPI), and the Consumer Electronics Association. He was inducted to the International Astronautics Federation and the Space Foundation Halls of Fame and the Clark School of Engineering Innovation Hall of Fame. Mr. Briskman was a former President of the North American Broadcasters Association’s Board of Directors.
     
    William R. Calhoun Jr. 
    As Vice Chairman and Executive Vice President of Clark Construction, William (Bill) R. Calhoun, Jr. is responsible for driving strategic direction, including the acquisition of new work and identifying new and emerging markets. Mr. Calhoun began his career with Clark in 1983, and since then, has provided leadership on a number of award-winning projects including National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency New Campus East, Brooke Army Medical Center, Verizon Center (now Capital One Arena), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology Advanced Measurement Laboratory.

    Mr. Calhoun serves on the Board of Visitors for the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland and is a member of the Corporate Advisory Board of So Others Might Eat. He is a National Peer in both the General Service Administration (GSA) and Veterans Affairs’ (VA) Construction Excellence Peer Review Program and has served on the Board of Directors for the Construction Industry Round Table. Mr. Calhoun holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and he completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. He is a member of the Georgia Tech College of Engineering Advisory Board and the school’s Construction Advisory Board. He was inducted into Georgia Tech’s Academy of Distinguished Engineering Alumni as well as the National Academy of Construction.

     

    Nancy Margolis
    Nancy Margolis served as President of Energetics Incorporated in Columbia, Maryland from 2010 until her retirement this past summer. During her 33-year career at Energetics, Ms. Margolis supported clients at the U.S. Department of Energy and its national laboratories on research and development programs to improve the energy efficiency of U.S. manufacturing. Over the past two decades, she has worked with numerous industrial sectors on creating technology roadmaps to identify research paths for achieving bold energy and sustainability goals. She also contributed to several National Academies’ studies, including the 2008 report “America’s Energy Future.” Prior to joining Energetics, Ms. Margolis developed power plant reliability models as an engineer for ARINC Research Corporation in Annapolis, Maryland. She also worked as a chemist and shift foreman for Bethlehem Steel Corporation at its Sparrows Point plant in Baltimore during the late 1970s.

    Ms. Margolis earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Johns Hopkins University in 1977 and a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland in 1981. Ms. Margolis was recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy for her contributions to developing “Visions and Technology Roadmaps for U.S. Industries” and was included by DOE on its “Steel Industry of the Future Wall of Fame.” She currently serves as chair of the Visiting Committee for UMD’s Mechanical Engineering Department and is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. She enjoys mentoring early- and mid-career women engineers.
     
    Richard L. Vogel, Jr.
    Richard L. Vogel, Jr. is Senior Vice President at Whiting-Turner Contracting Company where he manages a division focusing on construction work in the Mid-Atlantic area. Whiting-Turner is the largest building contractor in the Mid-Atlantic area and the second largest domestic building construction company in the United States, with annual revenue exceeding $6 Billion.

    Mr. Vogel joined Whiting-Turner in 1972, was promoted to Project Manager in 1974, Vice President in 1983, and Senior Vice President in 1999. Mr. Vogel opened Whiting-Turner’s Washington office in 1985, gained oversight of the Richmond office in 1999, opened the Northern Virginia office in 2000, and opened the Norfolk office in 2006. In his 45 years with Whiting-Turner, Mr. Vogel has successfully managed many hundreds of projects, including facilities in the areas of education, institutions, corporate headquarters, offices, apartments, data centers, hotels, retail, and many other types of building construction.

    Mr. Vogel is also involved in many organizations and has served or is currently serving on many corporate and non-profit boards of directors, including the Boards of Whiting-Turner, the Greater Washington Board of Trade, University of Maryland School of Architecture, Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heat, Advanced Renewable Energy Systems, LLC, among others.

    Mr. Vogel earned a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with high honors from the University of Maryland in 1972 where he was inducted into Tau Beta Pi, Chi Epsilon, and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies. Mr. Vogel also earned an MBA in Finance with high honors from the University of Maryland in 1980 and was initiated into the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society.

    Mr. Vogel lives in Columbia, Maryland with his wife of 46 years, Dr. Stefanie Vogel, Professor of Immunology and Microbiology at the University of Maryland, School of Medicine. They have two children, Sarah Vogel Weise and Andrew Richard Vogel, and two granddaughters, Linna and Brianne Weise.
     

     

    Ken BellKenneth R. Bell, P.E., Ph.D.
    Dr. Kenneth R. Bell is a Technology Manager for Bechtel’s Nuclear, Environmental and Security Global Business Unit (GBU) located in Reston, Virginia. Dr. Bell joined Bechtel upon obtaining his Ph.D. almost 33 years ago. He started as a staff engineer and advanced through Bechtel’s technical specialist career path as an engineering specialist to principal engineer, and now a Technology Manager. Although the majority of his career with Bechtel has been in the Power GBU, he has also completed three long-term overseas assignments for other GBUs, including a three and a half year assignment in Hong Kong on a rail project, an assignment in New Caledonia on a nickel mining project, and a two year assignment in Trinidad on the Atlantic LNG project. He is currently serving as the lead geotechnical engineer on the proposed two-unit Wylfa Newydd Nuclear Power Plant Project in northwest Wales. Immediately prior to this position, Dr. Bell served in the roles of Chief Engineer for Bechtel’s Geotechnical & Hydraulic Engineering Services (G&HES) group for both the Power and Infrastructure GBUs as well as the Corporate Manager of G&HES. Recognized for his technical expertise, Dr. Bell has been elected as a Bechtel Fellow, an American Society of Civil Engineers Fellow and an ASTM Fellow. He also holds the title of Diplomate through the Academy of Geo-Professionals. Dr. Bell has authored or co-authored over 25 technical papers and has been an adjunct professor at both the University of Maryland and George Mason University. He received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. all from the University of Maryland in 1974, 1976 and 1983 respectively. He currently serves as the Chair of the Board of Visitors for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Dr. Bell has been a registered engineer in the State of Maryland since 1983.


    William KoffelWilliam E. Koffel, P.E., FSFPE
    William E. Koffel, Jr. is the President of Koffel Associates, an international fire protection and life safety engineering design and consulting firm based in Columbia, MD and recognized as the expert in fire protection and life safety aspect of codes and standards. A tireless leader in the field of Fire Protection, Mr. Koffel has served on many committees, has written dozens of articles and has appeared on national news. Mr. Koffel received his B.S. in Fire Protection Engineering from the A. James Clark School of Engineering in 1979 and his B.A. from Ursinus College in 1978. He is active in the development process of the industry’s governing codes, standards and design guidelines. He currently serves as the President of the Automatic Fire Alarm Association and previously served as the President for the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and on the Board of Governors for the American Association of Engineering Societies. He has won a variety of prestigious awards including the International Code Council Affiliate Award, National Fire Protection Association Committee Service Award, the Society of Fire Protection Engineers Grade of Fellow, the D. Peter Lund Award, the Hats Off Award, President’s Award and John L. Bryan Mentoring Award. At the Clark School, he serves on the Dean’s Board of Visitors and is a member of the Department of Fire Protection Engineering’s Board of Visitors and its Curriculum Advisory Committee.


    Jennifer ReganJennifer A. Regan, P.E
    Jennifer A. Regan is the CEO of Key Tech, a Baltimore, Maryland technology development firm she co-founded in 1998. Ms. Regan leads corporate strategy and development, manages client relationships, and oversees business development. Key Tech consults to global product companies in medical, industrial and consumer markets, commercializing new technologies into medical devices and precision instruments. Key Tech develops medical products in diverse fields, including molecular and point-of-care diagnostics, drug delivery instruments, pharmacy compounders, surgical tools and wearable patient monitors. Prior to Key Tech, Ms. Regan consulted to global power industry clients for 14 years at MPR Associates in Washington, DC and at Corey Regan Inc., which she also co-founded. Ms. Regan holds patents and has published papers on flow measurement and precision instrumentation design in proceedings of the Instrument Society of America, the American Nuclear Society, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Outside of Key Tech, Ms. Regan is passionate about advancing engineering education and increasing enrollment in STEM education and careers. She is currently Vice Chair of the Clark School Board of Visitors, and is a proud former member and Chair of the Advisory Board for the Women in Engineering program at the Clark School. She was recently recognized as an International Business Leader by Maryland’s World Trade Center Institute. She regularly mentors students and young professional entrepreneurs in the greater Baltimore and DC technology community. Ms. Regan is a registered Professional Engineer holding a B.S. in Physics from Georgetown University and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from The Catholic University of America. 

    Kimberly BrownKimberly A. Brown, Ph.D.
    Kimberly Brown is the founder and CEO of Amethyst Technologies, LLC. Amethyst personnel are involved in various functions to develop multiple quality programs for global health, worldwide clinical trials, drug manufacturing, and FDA compliance in emerging infectious disease research to promote drug development for the world’s deadliest pathogens. Her commitment to global health was further demonstrated last year when Amethyst volunteered to train more than 150 healthcare workers in West Africa during the peak of the Ebola outbreak. Dr. Brown began working in the laboratory compliance industry in 1998 as an intern for Cell Systems, Inc. (CSI) while attending the University of Maryland College Park and purchased the contract rights from CSI in 2007. Amethyst was then awarded CSI’s contract to continue providing services to the federal government. Amethyst began with one client and since then has supported more than 15 Department of Defense laboratory programs in the US and Africa, numerous biotechnology companies, and commercial companies including Coca Cola. Currently, Amethyst is expanding their footprint and building four laboratories in West Africa that they will own and operate. Community service and activism is a priority for Dr. Brown. In 2010 and 2012 respectively, she was appointed by the Governor of Maryland to the Maryland Commission for Women and to the Maryland Life Science Advisory Board. Dr. Brown serves on the Anne Arundel Minority Business Enterprise Committee. She also created a non-profit organization, Global Outcomes, Inc., that focuses on global health, STEM education, and economic empowerment in the US and developing countries. She is a current member of the Clark School Board of Visitors and is the immediate past president of the Engineering Alumni Board. Dr. Brown is a Baltimore, Maryland native and a lifetime member of the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute Alumni Association. She obtained a Ph. D. and M.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Maryland College Park and her B.S. from the University of Delaware.


    Warren CitrinWarren I. Citrin
    Warren Citrin is a successful entrepreneur, technology innovator, and investor who has founded several companies related to telecommunications and defense. Mr. Citrin started his career at the Applied Physics Laboratory where he made numerous important contributions including design and development of automatic signal processing tracking systems for surface and airborne combatant radar systems. Most notably, Mr. Citrin spearheaded the design, development, and integration of the Cooperative Engagement Capability – the US Navy’s premier radar network. In 1996 Mr. Citrin co-founded Solipsys Corporation, a defense contracting company where he was the CEO and member of the board. During his time as CEO, Solipsys grew to over 200 employees with no debt or outside ownership. In 2003, Solipsys was sold to Raytheon. After selling Solipsys Mr. Citrin founded numerous new companies. Most recently, he founded Fractograf LLC, a platform for its mobile app, which allows users to create customized, collaborative, dynamic and sharable worlds of images from photos and videos, along with links to online content from their favorite websites to music, audio, text files, and more. Mr. Citrin has generously supported students from across the Clark School of Engineering and the University of Maryland. In 2007 Mr. Citrin established the Impact Pre-Seed Fund, which offered grants to students who participate in Mtech’s Hinman CEOs, Hillman Entrepreneurs, and the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program. In 2013 Mr. Citrin established the Warren Citrin Graduate Fellowships, which supported four Ph.D. students interested in conducting commercially viable research in the broad area of sustainability. Mr. Citrin is a member of the A. James Clark School’s Board of Visitors. Mr. Citrin received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1973 from the University of South Carolina, and his M.S. degree in Applied Mathematics from SUNY-Stony Brook in 1977. As a recipient of the Glenn L. Martin Medal, he has been inducted in the University of Maryland’s Alumni Association with a Lifetime Membership.     Peter EmmonsPeter H. Emmons
    Peter Emmons graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park’s Department of Civil Engineering in 1973 and was one of the first participants in the engineering cooperative education (CO-OP) program. In 1974 Mr. Emmons founded and started Structural Preservation Systems, Inc, known today as Structural Group, a services and technologies company specializing in making new and existing structures last longer and be stronger. Their portfolio includes buildings, bridges, and other civil and urban infrastructure. Based in Columbia, Maryland, the company is the leading company in the field in the US and Middle East with more than 2,500 employees. Mr. Emmons has authored a bestselling industry book, Concrete Repair and Maintenance Illustrated, published in seven languages. He is the recipient of numerous industry awards and has been named the most influential leader in the concrete industry. Mr. Emmons is a patent holder on more than seven inventions. Mr. Emmons’ industry work includes leading the creation of a code for the repair of concrete structures. Some noted structures Mr. Emmons and his company have worked on include Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, Baltimore Aquarium, Calvert Cliff Nuclear Plant, University of Maryland’s XFinity Center, the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa, in Dubai and armoring of the new One World Trade Center in Manhattan. For weekend fun Mr. Emmons builds hobbit houses, stone arch bridges, zip lines, waterfall trails and restores historic homes.

    Robert DeutschRobert W. Deutsch
    Robert W. Deutsch began his entrepreneurial career in Maryland in 1966 when he founded the General Physics Corporation to serve federal agencies and major U.S. corporations in the nuclear power industry. A product of New York City public schools, Bob Deutsch returned from serving in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II and enrolled at MIT, graduating with a degree in physics and going on to UC Berkeley, where he received his Ph.D. in nuclear physics in 1953. By 1980 General Physics had grown into a national leader in training and technical consulting services for nuclear power generation and expanded into Europe, the Middle East and Asia. When Dr. Deutsch left in 1988, General Physics employed over 1,000 engineers and scientists in the U.S. and abroad. But “Dr. D,” as he was known to his colleagues and friends, was not ready to retire. Within a year after leaving General Physics, Dr. D. launched RWD Technologies to pursue a bolder, broader vision of how advanced engineering and technological systems would continue to transform industries, including manufacturing, distribution, financial services, healthcare and beyond. While leading RWD Technologies as its Chairman and CEO for 21 years, Dr. D. grew the corporation to achieve $221 million in revenues in 2008 with 1,500 employees worldwide.


    Janett EppsJeanette J. Epps 
    Jeanette J. Epps is a NASA astronaut and former CIA Technical Intelligence Officer. She was selected in July 2009 as one of 14 members of the 20th NASA astronaut class. She has recently graduated from Astronaut Candidate Training that included scientific and technical briefings, intensive instruction in International Space Station systems, Extravehicular Activity (EVA), robotics, physiological training, T-38 flight training and water and wilderness survival training. In 2014, Epps served as an aquanaut aboard the Aquarius underwater laboratory during the NEEMO 18 undersea exploration. A NASA Fellow during graduate school, Dr. Epps authored several highly referenced journal and conference articles describing her research. Her research involved extensive testing of composite swept-tip beams, comparative analysis of analytical models and experimental data for shape memory alloys and the application of shape memory alloy actuators for tracking helicopter rotor blades. After completing graduate school, Dr. Epps spent more than two years working at Ford Motor Company as a Technical Specialist in the Scientific Research Laboratory. In 2002 Dr. Epps joined the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) where she spent more than seven years working as a Technical Intelligence Officer. She received multiple performance awards for her work at the CIA. Dr. Epps received the NASA GSRP Fellowship 1996-1997, 1997-1998 and 1998-1999; the NASA Exceptional Performance Award 2003, 2004 and 2008; and was inducted into the University of Maryland, Department of Aerospace Engineering, Academy of Distinguished Alumni 2012. She is a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the Society for Science & the Public. She received a B.S. degree in physics from LeMoyne College in 1992 and M.S. and Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the University of Maryland in 1994 and 2000, respectively.


    Emilio FernandezEmilio A. Fernandez, Jr. 
    Emilio A. Fernandez, Jr. is the Managing Director of Pulse Capital LLC, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Wabtec and former President, CEO, and co-founder of Pulse Electronics, Inc. Mr. Fernandez started his career in the railroad industry. In 1977 he and UMD classmate Angel Bezos, co-founded Pulse Electronics to produce electronic monitors and control systems for the railroads, which was acquired by Wabtec (formally The Westinghouse Air Brake Company) in 1995. In 1989 Mr. Fernandez organized a group of scientists and engineers and formed a second company, Pulse Medical Instruments, an organization devoted to the development of screening instruments that detect neurological variations, which are indicative of worker impairment. Since then Mr. Fernandez has established six new ventures covering a broad spectrum of technology. Mr. Fernandez holds a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland and a M.S. degree in engineering administration from George Washington University. Mr. Fernandez serves or has served on many boards, including the Board of the Foundation for a Creative America, the Hispanic Leadership Council, the Board of Trustees of the George Washington University, as Chairman of the George Washington Medical Center, the Hispanic Business College Fund, Inc., the Board of Trustees of the University of Maryland College Park Foundation, the Board of the Smithsonian Institution Washington Council, the Board of the National Museum of American History, and the Board of Visitors of the A. James Clark School of Engineering. He has been awarded numerous patents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, including the technology behind the ubiquitous e-readers. He and his wife live in McLean, Virginia, and are the parents of two grown children.


    Naomi LeonardNaomi E. Leonard
    Naomi E. Leonard is the Edwin S. Wilsey Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and associated faculty member of the Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics at Princeton University.  She is also Director of Princeton’s Council on Science and Technology and an affiliated faculty member of the Program in Quantitative and Computational Biology and the Princeton Neuroscience Institute. Her research and teaching are in nonlinear control and dynamics and in particular the development of rigorous and systematic approaches to examine and design feedback and interconnection in complex, dynamical systems. Her recent focus is on mechanisms of collective motion and collective decision-making for multi-agent systems in nature (analysis of animal and human groups) and in engineering (design of robotic teams). She has applied her work to collective sensing strategies for mobile sensor networks and led a multidisciplinary ocean sensing project with a month-long deployment of an automated, adaptive network of underwater robotic vehicles in Monterey Bay, CA. She has studied the collective dynamics of killifish, starlings, honeybees, and caribou, and has explored what happens when dancers use structured improvisation modeled after flocking. She is proud of the many undergraduates, the 24 graduate students and the 11 post-doctoral researchers with whom she has worked. Dr. Leonard received a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Princeton University in 1985. She received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Maryland’s Electrical and Computer Engineering Department in 1991 and 1994, respectively, with a major in control theory and a minor in communication theory. Dr. Leonard is a MacArthur Fellow and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She is a Fellow of the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineering, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and International Federation of Automatic Control. She lives in Princeton, NJ with her husband Tim Leonard and their two teenaged daughters: Amara and Lily.


    Vikram ManikondaVikram Manikonda 
    Vikram Manikonda is President and CEO of Intelligent Automation, Inc (IAI). IAI is a technology innovation company headquartered in Rockville, MD,  that specializes in providing advanced technology solutions and R&D services to federal agencies and corporations throughout the United States and internationally. As IAI’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr.  Manikonda is responsible for IAI’s day-to-day-operations, as well as leading the company’s research and product development strategy. Since joining IAI in 1999, he has played an instrumental role in leading and growing IAI’s research and product portfolio and business in the areas of robotics and control, motion description languages, multi-agent systems, modeling and simulation and air traffic management. Prior to 2008 he was Vice President and Director of IAI’s Distributed Intelligent Systems Division. In these roles he served as the principal investigator, and program manager for IAI’s efforts on several large DOD and NASA programs, such as the Future Combats Systems, DARPA’s LANdroids Program and NASA’s Airspace Concept Evaluation System. Dr. Manikonda currently serves as the Chair of the Strategic Advisory Council for Institute for Systems Research at the University of Maryland. He is also the recipient of the NASA team achievement award, and the NASA Space Act Software Release Award for his contributions to the development of the Airspace Concept Evaluation System (ACES); and the Northrop Grumman Certificate of Achievement for Contributions to FCS-LDSS program. He is author of over 40 publications in refereed journals, books and conference proceedings in the area of robotics, multi-agent systems, and nonlinear and intelligent control. Dr. Manikonda received his B.E. degree in electrical engineering from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, India, in 1992, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, both in electrical engineering, from the University of Maryland at College Park, in 1994 and 1997 respectively.


    John PooleJohn “Jack” W. Poole, III
    John “Jack” W. Poole, III is a Principal at Poole Fire Protection located in Olathe, Kansas. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1986 with a B.S. degree in fire protection engineering. Mr. Poole is a registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Fire Protection, licensed in 52 states and territories; his expertise includes designing fire suppression and detection systems. He has designed hundreds of fire suppression and fire alarm and detection systems for public and private clients all around the world. Mr. Poole is active in his community, as a volunteer firefighter and Fire Marshal for South Johnson County Fire Department, as well as several leadership positions in professional organizations such as the American Backflow Prevention Association, the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), several National Fire Protection Association Technical Committees, and the Oklahoma State Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology Advisory Board. The industry has recognized Mr. Poole and Poole Fire Protection for their efforts. In 2009 Poole Fire Protection was awarded the Kansas City 25 Under 25 Award, which recognized 25 outstanding Kansas City businesses with under 25 employees. In 2011 the Society of American Military Engineers awarded Poole Fire Protection with an Honorable Mention for the Small Business of the Year award. This award was presented to the firm for use of innovative technology or management to achieve outstanding results in support of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. In 2014 Seimens presented their inaugural “Engineer Innovation Award” to Poole Fire Protection at the national NFPA Conference, which recognized Poole’s innovative thinking and problem solving in fire and life safety system design. Mr. Poole is married to his wife and business partner Laura. They have two children, Drew (25) and Stephanie (21), both of whom are obtaining Fire Protection Engineering degrees from the University of Maryland.


    Thomas SchollThomas H. Scholl
    Thomas H. Scholl is a successful entrepreneur, technology innovator and investor. He has been directly involved in more than 40 start-ups with differing roles including founder, chairman, CEO, board member and investor. He is experienced in both hardware and software products – typically created from deep intellectual property. Most recently, Mr. Scholl was venture partner at Novak Biddle Venture Partners in Bethesda, Maryland. As a venture capitalist for more than ten years, he played a pivotal role identifying, investing in and counseling portfolio companies from early stage/seed investment through successful exit. He sat on the boards of Paratek (acquired by RIM/Blackberry), Command Information (acquired by Salient Federal Solutions), Woodwind Communications (acquired by Vina), Vubiquity, Princeton Optronics, and Fiberzone. In 2011 Mr. Scholl was recognized as the venture capital “Friend of the Entrepreneur” by the Washington Business Journal. Mr. Scholl is a graduate of Purdue University in philosophy and literature, and serves as a member of the Dean's Advisory Council of the College of Liberal Arts, receiving Purdue's Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2009. In May 2014, Mr. Scholl received a Honorary Doctorate of Letters from his alma mater. He is a trustee at Stevens Institute of Technology, a past trustee at Capitol College and also serves as the chairman of the Research Enterprise and Technology Commercialization Committee. He is a member of the Board of Trustees at the University of Maryland College Park Foundation and chairman of the Board of Visitors at the A. James Clark School of Engineering. Mr. Scholl has six patents relating to software, the Internet, and digital telephone systems, and he is the author of "Packet Switching" in McGraw Hill's Electronic Communications Handbook. He is a member of IEEE and ACM, and he attended the Executive Management (non-degree) program at MIT's Sloan School. Growing up, Mr. Scholl was an avid Ham radio operator and an Eagle Scout. He has been writing poetry since he was 16. He is married to Susan Hitz Scholl and has two sons, William and Tommy.
