With the arrival of another hurricane season, the University of Maryland is offering reporters the chance to experience hurricane-force winds firsthand at the Glenn L. Martin Wind Tunnel Media Day on Friday, June 23, on the College Park campus. Members of the media will have the opportunity to stand in the wind tunnel and face Category 3 winds—up to 115 mph! This exclusive access is available just once a year.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts a 45 percent chance of above-normal Atlantic hurricane activity in 2017, with the potential for as many as four major hurricanes.

University of Maryland faculty, scientists, and alumni will be on hand to answer questions about weather, wind, disaster resilience and response, and the wind tunnel.

The Wind Tunnel is located on Paint Branch Drive near the intersection of Campus Drive and Paint Branch Drive, Bldg. #081 on the University of Maryland campus map.

Limited parking is available in lot GG3 on Paint Branch Drive across from the Wind Tunnel. An attendant will be onsite to direct visitors to the appropriate parking spot.

FOR ATTENDEES:
Due to the wind velocities experienced in the tunnel, visitors are strongly advised to wear durable, rubber-soled shoes and snug, securely fastened clothing.
