Alumnus England Receives Eisenhower Award
1961 electrical engineering alumnus Gordon England, U.S. deputy secretary of defense, received the National Defense Industrial Association's Dwight D. Eisenhower Award for his contributions to national security earlier this month.
England said he was inspired by Eisenhower’s achievements as a military leader and strategist in America's struggle against communism during the Cold War.
"The supreme quality for leadership is integrity," he said after receiving the award. "Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a football field, in an army, or in an office."
England served as secretary of the Navy previously. He was nominated as deputy defense secretary in 2005 by Pres. Bush and confirmed earlier this year by the U.S. Senate.
