What motivated you to become a ClarkLEADER?
At my freshman ClarkLEAD session in the fall of 2022, I had an enjoyable and eye-opening experience—one where I formed meaningful relationships with my fellow engineers, and gleamed valuable insights on the life and trajectory of an engineering student at UMD. Seeing as my overall experience in the Clark School has had an irreplaceable impact on my life, I hope to share just a sliver of that potential with incoming engineering students.
What are some organizations or extracurricular activities you think new students should know about?
The American Society of Civil Engineers is a group you’ll hear a lot about. Join them, if for no other reason than for it to be a bit of a gateway into the professional engineering world. Aside from that, there is a myriad of extracurricular activities and groups to take part in. For those interested in playing sports, the intramural and club sports organizations offer a variety of levels of competition and dedication. For music lovers, Jammin’ at Maryland, Terrapin Record Label, and the Music Experimentation Club offer opportunities for musicians around campus to connect. Pursuing your extracurricular interests of course isn’t restricted to official student organizations, though, and some of your most memorable experiences will come from the spontaneity and adventure inherent in college life.
If you attended ClarkLEAD as a first-year student, what did you enjoy most about the event?
I most enjoyed conversing with my fellow engineers at my table. Anyone is reasonable to worry about making connections and forming friendships upon coming to college, but ClarkLEAD allowed me to freely interact with a group of students willing to listen, learn, share, and have fun with each other.
What is one piece of advice you would like to share with new Maryland Engineering students?
Your coursework will be difficult. You will struggle. You’ll likely get worse grades than you ever have before. This doesn’t define you. Take care to put time and effort into your health, your relationships, and the things that make you happy.
