Alexander, India
In partnership with Whiting-Turner and TouchPoint Baltimore, the Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) department is launching an experiential learning initiative. India will focus on developing, implementing, and managing this program, which aims to expose, engage, recruit, retain, graduate, and employ future engineers from Baltimore. The program will primarily target K-12 outreach in the Baltimore community, fostering connections with CEE faculty, staff, undergraduate engineering students, community partners, and corporate partners. These collaborations will create a pipeline to support students with a keen interest in engineering, guiding them successfully through their higher education journey.
India is a Baltimore native and UMD alumna. She brings over ten years of experience in events management and program development, having created, planned, and executed numerous programs in both the marketing and academic sectors. She began her career at the University of Maryland, working for the Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering as an Outreach and Recruitment Program Coordinator. Now, she is excited to return to higher education to pursue her passion for supporting students. India says, "My hope is that by fostering an environment that values learning by doing, I will help lay the foundation for developing competent and confident future engineers. I aspire to create a culture of hands-on exploration, where students engage in meaningful projects, tackle complex challenges, and apply engineering principles in authentic settings. Through summer research experiences, immersive engineering camps, field trips, and design-build projects, students will have opportunities to work with undergraduate engineering students, faculty, and industry professionals, gaining insights into engineering practices, technological advancements, and societal needs."
