Roy Receives 2019 CSL Thesis Award
Published October 30, 2019
Nirupam Roy, an assistant professor of computer science, has received an award for his doctoral thesis completed at the Coordinated Science Laboratory (CSL) at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign.
He was recognized on October 28 with the 2019 CSL Ph.D. Thesis Award, bestowed annually to a researcher whose doctoral thesis makes advances in a disciplinary area that has an interdisciplinary angle.
“Inaudible Acoustics: Techniques and Applications,” presents methods for sensing, communication and jamming with inaudible acoustics.
In the paper, Roy details his work in developing signal processing techniques that enable common microphones to sense ultrasonic signals and physical vibrations. He states that these technical primitives serve as the building blocks of new kinds of applications—where the signals remain inaudible to humans but become recordable to microphone-enabled devices.
Roy, who started working at the University of Maryland last summer, also has an appointment in the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies. He is planning future projects that will target a stronger convergence of sensing, computing, and communications in tomorrow's Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems, and healthcare technologies.
