Members of Terp Vets, the University of Maryland’s organization for student veterans, and others plant 2,977 miniature American flags on McKeldin Mall on Monday to commemorate each of the lives lost during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The annual event serves as a moment of remembrance for the campus community, and one of contemplation as well, as so many current students were born after 9/11. “What we're looking to do is turn this into a period of reflection upon 20 years of war and how that has affected Americans globally,” said Kat Robinson, coordinator for Veteran Student Life and a U.S. Army reservist.
