Issue
I tried to use Microsoft Word (or Excel or PowerPoint) on my Mac and it said my account does not allow for editing on Mac and to contact an admin about my Microsoft 365 Plan.
Environment
Microsoft 365/Office.
Resolution
To determine if the issue is with your account or with your installation, try the following steps:
- Go to https://portal.office.com/. A Microsoft Sign in prompt will display.
- Enter your Directory ID followed by @umd.edu. For example, if your Directory ID is testudo, you will enter testudo@umd.edu. Do not enter your TERPmail address.
- Select the Next button. An Enter password prompt will display.
- Enter your Directory ID passphrase and select Sign in.
- Complete Duo multi-factor authentication, if prompted.
If you are able to access the online versions of Microsoft 365 after completing these steps, then the issue is with the installation of the Microsoft 365 applications. If you're unable to complete these steps because of an error, contact the IT Service Desk for assistance with your account.
To resolve the installation issue, try the following steps:
- Open Microsoft Word.
- Select Word (or Microsoft Word) in your Mac's menu bar. The application menu will display.
- Select Sign Out….
- Select the Word menu again and select Quit Word.
- Open Microsoft Word. The new document selection window will display.
- Select the Activate button at the bottom of the window's sidebar.
Word and the other Microsoft 365 applications should now let you edit and save documents. Contact the IT Service Desk if the error persists after completing these steps.
