With more than 20 years of providing structural and forensic engineering expertise around the country, Brian Tarantino (M.Eng. ’00) is the president of structural engineering firm Tarantino Engineering Consultants (TEC).

Prior to his time at the Clark School, Tarantino received his Bachelor of Civil Engineering with a Structural Concentration from the University of Delaware. He was working as a full-time project engineer in Baltimore when he decided it was time to pursue his goal of graduate school.

“I was looking for a reputable program in proximity to my work and home in which I could take classes on a part time basis while juggling a demanding full-time engineering job,” says Tarantino. “Maryland was a great fit for me and the demands I was under while attending grad school, and the additional technical classes in lieu of a thesis was also very attractive to me.”

After graduating with his Master of Engineering in Structural Engineering from the Clark School, Tarantino held roles as a senior engineer for regional structural engineering firm Morabito Consultants, Inc. and as a senior project manager for Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, a national engineering.

“Among colleagues and peers, you can tell the difference between those with a master’s and those without,” says Tarantino. “Because of my M.Eng., I gained a greater knowledgebase that allowed me to be more creative with the design solutions I produced.”

Tarantino was a structural manager for Airport Design Consultants when he launched TEC in 2013 to service his clients outside of the airport industry. Starting out as a one-person company, TEC is now a robust structural engineering consulting firm focused primarily on building design, forensic engineering, and steel connection design, with a specialty in breweries. One of their latest projects was Baltimore’s new Guinness Open Gate Brewery & Barrel House, the Irish brand’s first American brewery and tasting room in more than 60 years.
