What was the nature of the work you completed during the internship? I conducted a trade study on different material options to be used in an engine. I also conducted an analysis on a bolted joint to determine if any alternate fasteners could be used. My responsibilities also included working on testing instrumentation and production readiness efforts.
How was the work meaningful for you? The facilities required to test the engines are very impressive with large test stands to hold the engines off of the ground and run the instrumentation out of the engine and to the nearby control rooms. We were lucky enough to see some engines running and others being worked on. Overall, it was an enriching experience that showed me where a lot of the work I was currently doing would end up.
Would you recommend this internship to other UMD students? My internship with GE was an amazing experience for me, both in and out of work. I got to make connections and learn new skills in the office while also meeting other students from around the country who were interning as well. The intern experience that GE offers is one of a kind and I know it will help me as I move forward with my career.
