How did you find the internship/co-op? What was the interview process like? I found my internship on LinkedIn and applied via the company’s website. The interview included two rigorous rounds of technical interviews and a coding round. After I cleared those, I had a call with HR and received the final offer.
What have been the most interesting aspects of your internship? The opportunity to apply what I have learned in various courses was the most interesting part in my opinion. As I worked in the R&D department, I was allowed to research and build algorithms from scratch. This part was much more exciting.
What campus activities or courses do you think helped you, or would have helped you, with this internship? I think the most valuable course which helped me was the CMSC733 which allowed me to learn advanced computer vision concepts in a relatively short time.
How would you describe the company culture? What was the most helpful thing your supervisor did to make you feel comfortable at the organization? The company’s culture is absolutely great. My supervisor was helpful in various ways such as guiding me, providing every resource that I required to complete the task at hand and finally, free food and interactive environment were a plus.
Was there diversity among your colleagues within the department and throughout your internship/co-op experience? Yes indeed. I am from India and we had people in our team from Asia, Europe, the US and many other ethnicities from across the world.
How have your career or academic goals changed as a result of this internship experience? I became more sure about becoming a robotics perception engineer after completing this internship. It gave me confidence as I managed to complete my project.
What advice would you give other UMD engineering students seeking an internship or co-op position? Make a good resume and a good cover letter. Apply using referrals and always contact the hiring team after applying to stand out.
