ECE Alumni Provide Students with Strategies and Resources for Career Success during IEEE Spring Leadership Seminars
This spring, the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) IEEE student group held three Leadership Seminars featuring ECE Alumni who returned to College Park to share their personal career experiences and to present strategies for career success to ECE undergraduate and graduate students.
The seminars were general discussions on career paths and opportunities for engineers interested in large corporations, government, and start-ups. Speakers included Iyad Tarazi, Ashish Mehta, and Dimple Amin. Iyad Tarazi, CEO of Federated Wireless, kicked off the spring series with his talk titled, “Managing Your Destiny.” Read more about his talk here.
Manager of Load Analytics and Settlement at Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE), Ashish Mehta, encouraged students to take charge of career development through networking, mentoring relationships, and employee resource groups during his talk titled “Networking, Career Paths, and the many Disciplines of Engineering in the Corporate Environment.” Ashish Mehta graduated from the University of Maryland in 1994 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He has worked in various engineering and leadership positions at BGE for the past 25 years including a couple of co-op stints while still at UMCP. His current role is leading the Load Settlement and Analytics group that handles the Electric Load Settlement, Load Research and Load Forecasting functions for the utility.
Dimple Amin, Vice President and Networking Platforms Business Operations & Managing Director of Ciena India, presented “Navigating to Grow Your Career Effectively,” and stressed the importance of taking on challenges, seizing opportunities, building reputation, and developing critical universal skills. Dimple Amin graduated from the University of Maryland in 1991 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He joined Ciena as a start-up and has held many senior leadership positions at Ciena over his 20-year career at the company. Dimple Amin is currently responsible globally for driving Ciena's Networking Platforms Business Operations along with responsibilities as Managing Director for Ciena in India.
The IEEE Leadership Seminars will resume again in the fall.
